Contraindications of foot reflexology

In a previous article in our blog of Body & Mind, we explore the benefits and the basis of the foot reflexology, a therapeutic practice that uses pressure on specific points on the feet to alleviate various ailments and promote general health. Today, let's delve into the cases in which this technique can be counterproductive. Here are the most important foot reflexology contraindications to be aware of.

Foot reflexology
The foot reflects all our organs, come and discover its benefits.

Fungi and skin disorders

The health of the feet is fundamental to reflexology. If the feet have fungus, papillomas or any unknown skin disorder, it is wise to avoid massage. Touching and handling infected areas can spread the infection to other areas. In these cases, it is essential to maintain strict hygiene: wash and dry the feet thoroughly daily to avoid moisture that favours the proliferation of fungus.

Recommendation:

A useful ally in the treatment of fungal infections is tea tree essential oil, known for its bactericidal properties. Applying this oil daily can help control and dry out the infection, improving skin health.

Heart and circulatory problems

Reflexology is not recommended for people with heart disease, circulatory or blood problems. As this therapy mobilises the circulation from the feet to the head, there is a risk of destabilising patients with a history of heart attacks or related disorders, especially if they are not under appropriate medical treatment.

Considerations:

  • Varicose veins and thrombophlebitis: Reflexology can worsen circulation conditions in the legs, increasing the risk of blood clots that could dislodge and cause serious complications.
  • Medical clearance: If the patient is under treatment with anticoagulants and the condition is controlled, mild massage may be considered, subject to medical authorisation. In the absence of adequate treatment, mobilisation of the circulation could aggravate the situation, potentially leading to gangrene.

Wounds and ulcers

The presence of ulcers or open wounds on the feet is a clear contraindication for reflexology. The body needs time to close these lesions without interference. Massaging wounded areas can distract the immune system and increase the risk of infection, worsening the condition rather than improving it.

Emergency cases

In emergency situations, such as severe headache, high fever or recent injuries such as sprains, it is crucial to avoid reflexology. At these times, the body requires a natural recovery process without additional stimuli that could complicate the situation.

Acute injuries:

In cases of sprains or acute injuries to the foot or ankle, it is best to apply first aid, such as ice and rest, and seek medical attention before considering any type of massage. Once pain and swelling have subsided and recovery is underway, reflexology can be beneficial in improving movement and preventing sequelae.

Diabetic foot

The diabetic foot, characterised by changes in the colouring and circulation of the feet, represents another scenario where reflexology should be avoided. The circulatory complications associated with diabetes can significantly increase the risk of damage if pressure or massage is applied without proper supervision.

Postoperative period

The post-operative period requires special care. Although reflexology can be useful in some cases to facilitate the removal of anaesthesia and support recovery, it is vital to respect the recovery times indicated by the doctor, especially after operations on the legs or related to varicose veins. Only once the body has had sufficient time to heal can reflexology be considered.

Natural therapies, including foot reflexology, have an important preventive role in health, helping to maintain wellbeing and avoid deterioration. However, where specific medical conditions or illnesses exist, it is crucial to recognise contraindications and exercise caution. It is always advisable to seek the guidance of a medical professional before applying any therapeutic technique in the presence of the aforementioned conditions.
