Sports massage for runners in Valencia

Sport

Training for 42.195 kilometres takes consistency, rest and careful load management. A sports massage for the Valencia Marathon can form part of that plan when it is adapted to the point you have reached in training and to how your body responds. It does not replace warming up, sleep, nutrition or an injury assessment, but it may help you feel less stiff and support recovery during higher-volume weeks.

The 46th edition of the Valencia Trinidad Alfonso Zurich Marathon takes place on 6 December 2026. For many runners, August marks the start of the more specific part of the plan. It is a good time to decide where massage fits, rather than improvising during race week.

What Sports Massage Means for Runners

It is a form of sports massage adapted to the sport, the training phase and the condition of the muscles. For runners, it often pays particular attention to the calves, soleus, quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes and plantar fascia, as well as the hips and lower back when needed.

“Releasing” the muscles does not mean always applying maximum pressure. A session that is too intense or poorly timed can leave temporary tenderness. The practitioner should know your weekly mileage, your most recent hard session, your next long run and any discomfort that has changed the way you run.

What the Evidence Says About Massage and Recovery

It is important to keep expectations realistic. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 29 studies found no direct improvement in strength, sprint or endurance performance from massage. It did find small improvements in flexibility and delayed-onset muscle soreness. We therefore describe massage as a complementary tool for wellbeing and perceived recovery, not a shortcut to running faster.

When to Schedule Massage During Training

During High-Load Weeks

Schedule the session after a demanding block and before an easy or rest day. This allows you to see how your body responds without compromising an interval session, long run or marathon-pace workout. Frequency does not have to be fixed; it depends on your experience, training volume, tolerance and budget.

After a Long Run

Deep work is not always advisable immediately afterwards. First let your body settle, rehydrate, eat and check that there is no acute pain, swelling or injury. A later session can focus on relaxation and the feeling of stiffness, using an intensity that suits how you feel.

During the Taper

The final two or three weeks are not the time to try new techniques or pressure you have never experienced. If you already know how your body responds to sports massage, schedule any deep work with enough time to recover and reserve the days closest to the race for gentle, short and familiar treatments.

Valencia Marathon Week

Avoid an intense sports massage at the last minute. The aim is to reach the start line feeling good, not to create soreness or tenderness. If you want a session that week, tell the practitioner you are racing on Sunday, which workouts remain and how you have responded to previous massages.

Before and After the Race: The Massage Is Not the Same

TimingReasonable aimApproach
Previous daysArrive feeling mobile and confidentFamiliar, adapted work without excess
Immediately beforePrepare the body to moveBrief activation; it never replaces warming up
AfterwardsEncourage relaxation and manage perceived stiffnessGentle intensity at first, adjusted to tolerance

If this will be your first massage, have it during the training cycle rather than the day before the race. That way you can find out which pressure feels comfortable and how much time you need to feel recovered.

When to Stop and Seek Advice

Localised pain that gets worse while running, obvious swelling, loss of strength, tingling, inability to bear weight, severe night pain or discomfort that changes your stride should not be masked with massage. Stop hard training and consult a healthcare professional. You can also read when physiotherapy assessment is advisable.

Also mention any history of thrombosis, vascular problems, recent surgery, fever, infection, wounds or anticoagulant medication. Safety comes before the sporting calendar.

How to Get More From the Session

  • Bring that week’s plan: mileage, intensity and long run.
  • Describe what you feel precisely and explain when it started.
  • Do not ask for more pressure because you think “if it doesn’t hurt, it isn’t working”.
  • Allow a quiet period afterwards and follow the advice tailored to you.
  • Assess how you feel the next day before adjusting your next workout.
